A whole-home “economy” mode designed by Home Sense to reduce energy waste without sacrificing comfort:
smart lighting, climate control (thermostats/TRVs), automated shading and standby cut-off — fully installed,
programmed and tested.
Residential (apartment/villa)
Greater Cairo, Egypt
Smart switches/dimmers, thermostats & TRVs, smart sockets, curtain/shutter control, scenes & app/voice
Objective
Cut electricity consumption with practical automations using retrofit-friendly hardware and simple wall controls.
Challenges
- Keep existing finishes/back boxes where possible.
- Balance comfort with savings (no “always off” frustration).
- Ensure core automations work even if internet drops.
Strategy
- Create an “Economy” scene (Away/Night) to lower usage.
- Use Zigbee where scale/mesh reliability is needed.
- Program sensible schedules and app/voice shortcuts.
Lighting & Power
- Smart light switches/dimmers with scene control (Home/Away/Night).
- Auto-off timers for corridors and guest bathrooms.
- Smart sockets to cut standby on media gear & chargers.
Climate & Shading
- Smart thermostat + optional TRVs for room-level control.
- Economy setbacks at night/away; resume on arrival.
- Curtain/shutter control to reduce heat gain during peak sun.
Devices Used
- Smart Light Switches & Dimmers (Wi-Fi/Zigbee).
- Smart Thermostat & optional TRVs.
- Smart Sockets & Plugs.
- Curtain/Shutter Controllers.
- Zigbee/Wi-Fi Hub for local scenes and reliability.
Outcome
The household now uses a single “Economy” button and schedules to reduce lighting and climate usage when not needed.
Comfort is preserved via quick scene overrides and voice control.
